A Study on Development of a Program in Oral Health Education for Preschool Children

Abstract
With the Law of Oral Health established in 2000, the government-initiated oral health business activated energetically. The law has provided the major contents of oral health business concretely. Especially, it has also recognized the importance of the infants¡¯ oral health and showed the state of dental caries and its developments, and oral diseases. Under Article 4 of the Oral Health Enforcement Ordinance, which prescribes the national oral health survey, the surveys of actual conditions and consciousness for oral health and would be administered in every 3 years periodically. This study aims to develop the program of oral health education for preschool children. The program for preschool children has been developed resulting from the analysis of objectives and contents of the domestic and foreign countries¡¯s oral health education programs. On the basis of the results and discussion based on the surveys, it could be concluded that: First, the results of analysis of preschool children¡¯s oral health education objectives and contents of Korea and America are as follows. The analysis of objectives has showed 15 items among the whole items of oral health education utilized, but the numbers of objectives has showed differences according to programs, significantly. The analysis of education contents has also showed differences among major programs of Korea and America significantly. This analysis showed that about 10 items of contents and more than 3 items specified of the oral health education program are appropriate. Second, the significant objectives for the preschool oral health educational programs are suggested 12 item such as oral cavity, teeth, tooth-brushing, dental flossing, dental plaque, dietary control, regular check-ups, fluoride, dental caries, dental trauma, malocclusion, and the introduction of dental hospitals. The objectives were established by classifying genera objectives and practical goals for the lesson in each domain. The appropriate contents and the oral health educations for those educational objectives are required by utilizing a variety of oral health education materials.
